A thoughtfully-restored, beguiling & bewitching subterranean space
History
Sited on a traffic island, WC Bloomsbury emerges from a Grade II listed Victorian Water Closet, dating back to the late 19th century. Public toilets first appeared c. 1848 around London. The site is listed on Historic England’s ‘at risk register’ & has been diligently restored, respecting the 120 year old space. Original wood stalls form the booths, with some authentic porcelain pieces upholstered for additional seating. Original tiles form parts of the walls & granite & marble floors have been preserved.
The Guilford Place drinking fountain was built c. 1870 & is also Grade II listed. It was designed by architect Henry Darbishire, for Mrs. Whiting, to commemorate their mother.
