A thoughtfully-restored, beguiling & bewitching subterranean space

History
Resting underneath Clapham Common Tube Station for over 100 years, this Victorian Water Closet dates back to the late 19th century. Public toilets first appeared c. 1848 around London. This WC lay derelict for more than 30 years, before it was diligently restored. The majority of what you see is original - we retained & preserved as much as possible, including mosaic floors & tiled walls. The booths are the original wooden stalls & Royal Doulton porcelains still stand in the gents loo, in all their glory.
The attendantβs office was converted into the framework of the bar. The framed pieces in the βactualβ WC found during our refurbishment process, make for some interesting reading.
